If you are unemployed or underemployed don't feel alone. Nearly 9.1% of the American work force is unemployed. Here are a few things you can do on an interview or, to make yourself more valuable in your current position. Also, remember these tough times shall pass!
A life line for Success
DO:
- Arrive to work 10-15 minutes before your schedule starting time.
- Speak when entering a room ... Good morning, Good afternoon, etc...
- Create a good Impression by smiling.
- Be at your assigned station and ready to work at your starting time.
- Make sure you have reliable child care and transportation before you accept an assignment.
- Make sure you understand your job duties and you are willing to help out in other areas when needed.
- Go the extra mile and make sure you understand what the companies vision is.
- Make sure you understand the companies products or services.
- Make sure you have the skills for the position that you are applying for.
- Have an updated resume and an extra copy.
- Make an effort to get along with your co-workers.
- Keep up to date with new techniques in your career by subscribing to magazines in your field or have a current library card.
- Check if your felony 5, can be expunged: If you only have one felony and it's not of a violent nature or sexual related you may be eligible to get your felony expunged.
- Be aware that human resource may check your facebook pictures or other cyber information that is public.
- Use your magic words... Please and Thank You.
DON'T:
- Make personal phone calls or text while you you should be working.
- Check your internet or use Facebook on companies time.
- Text during meetings if you must reply excuse yourself.
- Take unauthorized breaks.
- Wear unacceptable clothes or shoes.
- Interrupt the speaker.
- No show for an interview, call to reschedule if something comes up.
- Drink alcohol during a lunch or a dinner interview.
Questions & Statements to think about before the interview...
- Why did you choose the career for which you are applying for?
- What motivates you to put forth your greatest effort?
- What are your short term and long term career goals?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What does success mean to you?
- What interests you about this company?
- What are your accomplishments?
- What skills do you have to offer this company?
- Do I work well with in a group or better alone?
- Should I greet the interviewer by their last name?
- Should I extend my hand first if the interviewer is a female? Always have a firm hand shake.
- Establish an instance rapport, and have a conversation concerning the employment opportunities; so you are not just answering questions.
- Explain answers instead of answering "Yes or "No."
- Speak in complete sentences and don't speak for more than two minutes.
- Follow the interviewer's lead always use correct English.

- What are the greatest challenges in this position?
- How soon are you looking to fill this position?
- Is there a parking lot this company utilize?
- Is there an opportunity for overtime?
- How long has this position been open?
- Is there an chance for growth within this company?
